Before computers came around, chairs were simple and usually had four stationary legs which held up the seat and the back legs were taller to hold up a piece that functioned as a back rest.  Made from wood or metal, they weren’t designed for sitting in many hours at a time.  Computers became common at businesses and studies in ergonomics and health became an issue with sitting at a computer for long hours and thus; the ergonomic computer chair was born.  As technology and computer workstations began to take hold in business throughout the globe, ergonomic chairs, keyboards, even ergonomic mice and computer desks themselves were designed for long usage throughout the day.  Having just a normal chair, back pain would be appearing in 15 minutes. Get something like a high quality, high back ergonomic computer chair, and expect to be comfortable in your office for many hours at a time.

Why is it important to know?

Over decades of changes, design improvements, and many new manufacturers, this type of chair is not only much more affordable but also comes in many different varieties compared to when they first came out on the market.  There are things you should know about them if you’re planning to buy one for your home office or business.  Some have more features of comfort than others but additional comfort usually means a higher price bracket as well – like a swivel ergonomic computer chair, for instance, which is nice if you have a very large corner desk – so you have to understand your personal needs to get what suites you best.

It’s all about Comfort

One thing to look out for is cheap ergonomic computer chairs that can look comfortable but after you try sitting on it for more than 20 minutes you realize that it is a bit awkward. Over a couple of hours, that slight awkward feeling turns into an ache and may eventually cause some serious back problems if ignored. This is not always apparent at first and one must be weary of buying a chair online and not knowing firsthand how that type of chair performs with your particular body style. Check the lumbar support, how firm the cushion is and how thick it is. A really soft, medium-thin cushion may seem perfect but over a short period of time will actually flatten like a pancake, no matter how much you weigh.

Get a feel for the Adjustability

Checking what type of adjustments the chair has and finding the limits of those adjustments is a great idea.  Higher quality chairs have adjustments to tighten and loosen the resistance that allows the chair to lean back, to lower and raise the height, position of the armrests (some chairs allow you to remove them completely) and even adjust the tension of the lumbar support.  You might find that trying out a particular chair seems uncomfortable until you manage to get it adjusted correctly.  However, other chairs are just too harsh for comfort or there is such a short range of flexibility in the adjustments that you can’t set it just right and sadly this is often the case if you go the cheaper route.

Know what your Body Needs

In many ways we are all unique and at the same time we are all human. However, the things that make us different can sometimes be a huge difference from person to person. Getting the best ergonomic computer chair that will suite your own body is the most important factor that could be possibly weighed. Find a chair that relaxes the muscles and allows you to have freedom at the same time. Moving from long hours of typing to handwriting on the desk or whatever the job entails, there should be utmost comfort while performing and this is what ergonomics is all about. There should be no cramping of muscles and if there is any fatigue or long repetition, than taking a break is only natural.

There are many more factors to weigh with ergonomics and it covers more than just chairs. Working in business settings today can mean tedious office work that involves lots of repetition. Having the most comfort available is going to significantly improve productivity and should be the obvious return on investment. Larger corporations will sometimes hire professionals, to not only help employees be more comfortable, but to educate employees to help themselves as well. Try to educate yourself and find out what your body needs are. Being productive at home can be just as important!
